A special thanks goes to Alex and Dan, the directors of the Documentary Edge Film Festival who did an amazing job! Very high quality events and excellent opportunity to meeting relevant people in the Documentary Film-making Industry. A very special thanks also goes to the friends of the Fred Hollows Foundation, who were exceptional in helping me advertising the film, and providing contacts to media. With them we plan to organize events in order to raise funds to support the work of Dr. Ruit and Dr. Tabin who are dedicated to eradicating blindness from the face of Earth.

After New Zealand, Out of the Darkness will be screened in Paris on April 1, at the ECÚ – European Independent Film Festival, and then after that. In April 2011 there will be screenings at three different USA Festivals: The Riverside International Film Festival, California, on April 8-17, the Indie Spirit Film Festival, Colorado, April 14-17 and Connecticut’s Premiere Hills Film Festival, (formerly known as the Kent Film Festival) April 7-10.

First Screenings and Edge Forum

The first screening in Auckland and the Documentary Edge Forum have been a wonderful experience so far. The quality of the theatrical projections was excellent and I have to give a special thank to everyone who attended the screening, including the numerous fund-raisers and friends of the Fred Hollows Foundation. Thank you for all your questions and for the positive feedback. Feel free to contact me at any time for DVDs and private or educational screenings of Out of the Darkness. I will be very happy to support your local activities by offering private screenings and joining your sessions with Skype-Interviews. It is my wish to build a community around the film that will enable to empower and promote the cause of Dr. Ruit and Dr Tabin, and you can be an active part in it by interacting with us on this website or on out facebook site.

Documentaries and Activism – The Rise of Socially Responsible Documentaries.

Facilitated by Quijing Wong, Pamela Yates, Paco de Onis, Stefano Levi, Dean Easterbrook, Annie Goldson.

Increasingly, filmmakers are finding voices for social causes through their documentaries and organizations are becoming more aware of the power of documentaries to bring their message to audiences. This might provide a new avenue of funding for filmmakers. For anyone interested in this topic, this session will be held at the WA Auckland University of Technology on February 26th, at 16:30. ÉCU – European Independent Film Festival

Out of the Darkness has been selected to compete with 77 other films at the European Independent Film Festival in Paris, France. The festival will screen European independent productions on April 1-3, 2011. I hope, this time my whole film team will be able to join me for the European Premiere. - Stefano

We are all very excited as “Out of the Darkness” has been selected to be screened at the Riverside International Film Festival in California, USA in April 2011. The documentary has also been awarded the Jury Prize for Best Mountain Film at the Mountain Film Festival in Mammoth, California, USA but there will be no public screenings at this festival. The Documentary Edge Film Festival, which will be hosting the World Premiere on February 26th, 2011 had added a second screening on the same day at 6:15 pm. You will find the schedule here. I’m also very happy that I will be accompanied by representatives of the NZ and Australian Fred Hollows Foundation, who are strongly involved in supporting Dr. Ruit’s work. They will be on stage with me at the screenings on Saturday 26th for the Q&A sessions following the two screenings.

World Premiére in New Zealand!

We’ve just received News from The Documentary New Zealand Trust that Out of the Darkness has been selected to be one of the 50 films screened at the Documentary Edge Film Festival in New Zealand and will take part to the competition. The Festival will take place from 17 Feb – 6 March 2011 in Auckland and 10-27 March 2011 in Wellington.

About the Film festival: “Documentary Edge Festival (formerly the DOCNZ International Documentary Film Festival) is Australasia’s only international competitive documentary film festival. It is held in New Zealand and showcases the very best in documentary film from New Zealand and around the World. The festival runs from late February and includes Awards Night, Q&A Sessions with filmmakers and special events.”

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack of “Out of the Darkness” is composed by Markus Aust at Chez Muziek adapting original Nepal instruments compositions by Prem Rana (Autari) who is an internationally awarded Nepali flute masters of our times. I met Prem last week in Belgium during his Europe 2010 Tournee with his group Sur Sudha. He handed over to me the recordings he had composed for the film in Kathmandu. The bamboo Flute is not the only instrument that will be heard in the film. A whole range of authentic Nepali instruments which are used by different ethnic groups and communities are part of the soundtrack!

This really is a project where East meets West. As for American Dr. Geoff Tabin meeting Nepali Dr. Sanduk Ruit to change people’s live overnight also the soundtrack of the film will be a melting pot of Eastern and Western atmospheres, and I am very anxious to see and listen the final result!

We are very excited to present this project to the world. We are currently working on the 3rd rough cut of “Out of the Darkness”. Few more months and I hope we will have the final cut. Our intention is to participate to film festivals internationally. We are looking for screenings and sales worldwide. I will keep this blog up to date for information about the development of this project. We are also looking for co-producers interested in supporting the realization of this independently produced and self-financed documentary film. (SL)
